The effect of only introducing one character in the opening sequence emphasises Tate’s lonesomeness. This represents the deeper side Tate has to his character. ![]() Oliver Tate appears reclusive in the opening sequences as he sits on the floor wearing dark colours. We may expect to find our character sitting in other parts of his room like his arm chair or on his bean bag instead of the floor.This further implies that Tate is not a normal teenager. Itįinally, we find Tate situated under the window on the floor. Faintly waves can be heard as well as sea gulls informing us that this film is located by the sea. We could infer from what Tate says as though he knows better than to “walk around like nothings wrong”.Ī slow panning shot of Tate’s room which creates a natural ambience giving subtle clues as to the location of the film through diegetic sound. It could be interpreted that Tate doesn’t want to be categorised with the everyday person and so talks of himself and them as two separate groups: “most people… no one else like them”. What he says has under tones of spite and condescension. Or has he been secluded by society? The voice over we hear from Tate is odd. Perhaps this is a boy who has secluded himself from society. The location of his room in the house, in the attic could represent the distance he has placed between himself and others. Tate’s individuality is distinguished from the beginning. The combination of the panning his room, the voice over and the close up of Tate informs us that he will be our protagonist in the film. We are only introduced to one character in the opening to Submarine. We are left wanting to know more about our protagonist as he stands alone by the sea at the end of the opening sequence. What is his relation to the sunsetting shots that follow?.Although it is obvious that the film will follow Tate the opening sequence leaves the story for the film mysterious. Not much can initially be interpreted from sequence. 2 shots of Tate follow both shots are from behind. ![]() As there is little of immediate significance in each shot we begin to wonder whether much will happen in the film. Each shot has an extended duration, lasting about 5 seconds long. Then 5 establishing shots of the landscape with the sun setting in the distance. The first, of what we, the audience presumes is his home town. My name is Oliver Tate.” This is followed by 2 quick cuts to increasingly short close ups of him to the beat of the guitar as the music begins. This thought motivates them to get out of bed, eat food and walk around like nothings wrong. That there is no one on the planet like them. He says “Most people think of themselves as individuals. This could be implying that the film follows Tate’s transition from an introvert to becoming more extroverted. This could represent how the narrative is about events in the real world as a pose to Tate’s own world ‘under the sea’. ![]() Perhaps, is the protagonist ‘out of the box’? When we find Tate, we discover him under the waterline of the poster next to him. When you are in a submarine you are effectively ‘boxed in’. Although there is no obvious answer we could interpret it in many ways. The boxed titles could be interpreted as representing how the character may feel restricted and boxed up. This helps us associate the film with the sea, creating stronger links with the location. The blue and white are the colours of the sea and the Navy. These are all showed is white writing on a blue background. This film demonstrates production synergy as it uses various sectors of companies to produce the film. There are the two main production companies: Film 4, a key advocate for British film, and the UK Film Council (BFI). Along with these, there are 6 other companies which helped produce the film. The multiple production companies shows that this is an independent production. Using inter-titles, make it more interesting to the audience. The reasoning behind doing this may be because have so may production companies all reeled off in one long list would be boring and is more likely to detract an audience the opposite to what an opening sequence is designed to do. these are spread apart with extracts of the film in between. Along with the UK Film Council (The National Lottery financially supports The UK Film Council hence why their logo is in set).Īfter the production cards we have the beginning of the titles.
